If you feel a little rusty on budget and tax issues, we have some tools to help you get back up to speed and “talk the budget talk.”
We just updated our website with the latest information on budget issues, which promise to take center stage in the upcoming legislative session. We put the most commonly used tax and budget resources in one place on the Resources page of our website and in printable form as the Advocate’s Fiscal Toolbox.
One resource you’ll find there is our updated Follow the Dollars budget timeline, which shows the key dates in the process to pass the state’s next two-year budget in 2013.
One important tool for understanding the size of government is the Price of Government, which measures Minnesota’s state and local government revenues as a share of personal income. Minnesota Management and Budget has updated the Price of Government data to take into account changes made during the 2012 Legislative Session, and we’ve updated our graph that shows the Price of Government over time. This historical look demonstrates how government in Minnesota has shrunk as a share of the economy since the 1990s.
Stay tuned. We’ll keep updating our website – and you – as new data become available.
