The State Capitol saw a flurry of activity last week as House and Senate budget committees worked to finish omnibus finance bills. The cuts-only approach emerging from the legislature has dangerous implications in both the short term and long term. In the short term, drastic reductions to critical services would make matters worse for those hit hardest by the economic crisis, including seniors, children, people with disabilities, the unemployed and low-income families. In the long term, cutting investments like education, health care, public safety, infrastructure and transportation would severely undermine the foundations of Minnesota’s future prosperity.
As the consequences of proposed cuts become clear, it is critical that Minnesotans make their voices heard. Today is an important day to do just that. The Minnesota Budget Project is a lead member of the Invest in Minnesota coalition. Join us and our many coalition partners from around the state participating in a call-in day. This is a critical moment to voice our concerns with our elected officials and urge them to take a balanced approach, including raising revenues, to address the budget shortfall.
